Bob Weiss, an assistant coach with the Dallas Mavericks, was named head coach of the San Antonio Spurs. Weiss, 42, just completed his sixth season as assistant to Dick Motta, the Mavericks’ head coach. It will be Weiss’ first head coaching job in the NBA.

Cotton Fitzsimmons was fired April 28 as San Antonio’s head coach after the Spurs finished the regular season with a 35-47 record and were eliminated in three straight games in the first round of the NBA playoffs by the Lakers.

At the time Fitzsimmons’ dismissal was announced, Spur owner Angelo Drossos said the club was in need of new direction.
