Long Beach : Bike Path Plans Ordered

The City Council has ordered completion of final plans for a $1.4-million bicycle path that will span the Long Beach oceanfront.

The council’s action follows a recommendation by a Citizens Design and Advisory Committee for the path that will link existing bike routes at the Los Angeles and San Gabriel rivers. New construction will run along the ocean from Alamitos Avenue to 54th Place in Belmont Shore, before jogging inland to 2nd Street and linking with the San Gabriel channel.

The city has spent $236,000 in state funds planning the route. It expects to raise another $1.2 million in grants.

The path was first proposed in the late 1970s, but residents of the nearby bluffs blocked it. They complained it would be an eyesore, increase litter and pose a hazard for people crossing it to reach the water. With time, most of that opposition dissipated.
