The 150-yard stretch of South Casa Beach in La Jolla still is quarantined due to a sewage spill that poured 24,000 gallons of sewage into the ocean Wednesday afternoon.

A power outage that had 187 San Diego Gas & Electric customers in the dark Wednesday also stopped pumps at the sewage pump station at 850 Coast Blvd., causing the spill. Service was restored within two hours to the mostly residential area of La Jolla.

Although the spill is harmless to beach walkers, swallowing or ingesting the sewage can cause severe stomach cramps, said John Melbourn, county public health engineer. The quarantine probably will be lifted Saturday.
