Dick Weber won his 28th career title Wednesday by defeating Les Zikes, 216-165, in the championship game of the $100,000 Showboat Invitational.

It was the second senior title for Weber, who won the 1983 Senior championship. The victory was worth $13,000 for the Hall of Famer, $10,000 more than his earnings for winning the 1963 Showboat event.

In the early games, Mickey Spiezio opened with a 262-220 decision over Glenn Pierce, then eliminated Carmen Salvino, 245-235, to reach the semifinal.

Against Zikes, Spiezio was comfortably ahead before he left the 4-6-7-10 in the ninth frame and lost, 205-200.

“When I saw how Spiezio started out, I thought it was lights out,” said Weber, 56. “He was locked in. But he made a little mistake and paid for it against Zikes.”

Weber was spectacular during the match-play competition. He averaged 231 for 36 games and went 13-3-2 in match play to lead the 100-man field by 507 pins.

Zikes earned $7,000 for second, Spiezio $5,000, Salvino $4,500 and Pierce $4,000.
