A 27-year-old man was shot in the leg by a Los Angeles police officer Saturday in Sunland after leading police on a five-mile chase and then attempting to run the officer down with his car, police reported.

The man, identified as Bart Logan, was spotted by Officer Norman Nagengast about 12:15 p.m. speeding south near the intersection of Sunland Boulevard and Stonehurst Avenue, said Lt. Charles Higbie, who investigates shootings involving officers of the Los Angeles Police Department.

Nagengast, a 22-year police veteran, pursued the motorist at speeds of up to 90 m.p.h. for about five miles east along La Tuna Canyon Road until the car spun out while trying to turn onto the westbound Foothill Freeway on-ramp, Higbie said.

When Nagengast approached Logan’s car on foot, Logan allegedly drove toward the officer and tried to run over him, Higbie said. Nagengast jumped aside and as the car passed him, shot once through the passenger’s window, striking Logan in the right leg, Higbie said.

Police searched Logan’s car and found a knife, a sawed-off shotgun and a small quantity of cocaine, Higbie said.

Logan, who police said carried no license and provided no fixed address, was booked on a charge of assault with a deadly weapon and was taken to Holy Cross Hospital in Mission Hills. He was later transported to the jail ward at County-USC Medical Center, where he was reported in satisfactory condition.

A woman passenger, Delores Sullivan, 36, also of no permanent address, was taken to the Foothill Division for questioning, Higbie said. She was booked on a charge of suspicion of possession of cocaine for sale.
