A hand grenade was found in a trash dumpster Sunday morning at a Costa Mesa shopping center, but a bomb squad member said it did not have a live charge.
Jim Ballenger, who lives near the Harbor Shopping Center at 2300 Harbor Blvd., called police at about 9 a.m. after spotting the grenade, Police Sgt. George Yezbick said.
Charles Stump of the Orange County Sheriff’s Department Hazardous Device Squad said the British-made grenade did not have a charge, but it did have a working fuse.
The bomb squad took the grenade for disposal, Yezbick said.
