A state park ranger who was mowing the grass to reduce fire hazards accidentally started a three-acre brush fire near San Pasqual Valley Road and Battle Mountain in North San Diego County Friday.

The nearby San Diego Wild Animal Park was not threatened and there were no injuries or structures damaged, San Diego Fire Department spokesman Rob Drake said.

It took 85 firefighters from San Diego, Escondido, Poway and the California Department of Forestry three hours to contain the blaze, which burned on steep terrain overgrown with brush.

“We had a hard time getting everything extinguished, with all the cactus and shrubs that were smoldering,” Drake said.
