Mike Andonian of Ventura High Replaces Shoup as Cal Lutheran Golf Coach

Bob Shoup has resigned as coach of the Cal Lutheran University golf team and will be replaced by former Ventura High golf coach Mike Andonian. Shoup, who coached the golf team for 10 years, will begin his 25th season as Cal Lutheran football coach in the fall.

Andonian, 60, has coached at Ventura High since 1966. He inherits a team that came within 10 strokes of advancing to the National Assn. of Intercollegiate Athletics national golf tournament in May.

Shoup angered school officials by leaving for a six-week European vacation days before the golf team competed in the NAIA District 3 championship.

“His taking vacation was not cleared by me or the administration,” Cal Lutheran Athletic Director Robert Doering said at the time.

Although Doering indicated that disciplinary action might be taken against Shoup when he returned from Europe, a spokesman for the university said Shoup informed Doering in March of his intention to resign.

Neither Shoup nor Doering was available for comment Friday night.
