Despite earlier denials that layoffs would be necessary, Sprint has disclosed plans to eliminate the jobs at its headquarters in Burlingame, Calif., due to an impending merger with U.S. Telecom. Three hundred Burlingame-based employees will be laid off and another 450 will be offered transfers to Kansas City, Mo., the designated headquarters of the son-to-be formed U.S. Sprint Communications Co., a Sprint spokesman said. The FCC and the Justice Deparment have yet to approve the joint venture.
