Share

Los Angeles police will begin a holiday operation in the San Fernando Valley tonight aimed at keeping drunk drivers off the streets. They will increase the number of officers on patrol and use civilian volunteers to book suspects.

Sgt. Dennis Zine said the crackdown will run from 6 p.m. to 3 a.m. tonight and resume at 4 p.m. Friday, running to 1 a.m.

Zine said about 75 motorcycle officers, about one-third more than normal, will be on patrol each night in targeted areas, which he would not identify.

Suspected drunk drivers will be taken to the nearest police division, where the volunteers will do the booking, to let officers spend more time on patrol, Zine said.
