Stock car owner Hoss Ellington was fined $5,000 after an illegal fuel cooling device was found on the Chevrolet that Sterling Marlin drove during Wednesday’s qualifying session for Friday’s Firecracker 400 at Daytona Beach, Fla. NASCAR director Dick Beaty said an insulated metal box packed with dry ice in the right front fender was found during a routine pre-qualifying inspection.
Cale Yarborough set a qualifying record of 203.523 m.p.h. to win his first pole position in nearly two years.
