Jesse Barfield and Rance Mulliniks each hit two home runs, powering the Toronto Blue Jays to an 8-5 victory over the Boston Red Sox Thursday night at Boston.

Barfield took the American League lead with his 20th and 21st homers. It was the 10th time he has hit more than one home run in a game during his career.

Mulliniks drove in four runs with a single and his ninth and 10th homers. It was the first time he has hit more than one home run in a game in his career. The 10 homers equal his career high for a season.

The Blue Jays, who snapped Roger Clemens’ 14-game winning streak Wednesday night, pounded Dennis (Oil Can) Boyd (10-6) for eight hits and five runs in less than five innings.

Minnesota 11, Baltimore 7--Ron Washington, who had only two RBIs this season entering this game at Minneapolis, came off the bench to drive in four runs, including three with an inside-the-park home run, to lead the Twins.

It was the Orioles’ 17th loss in their last 24 games and dropped them into fifth place in the American League East.

Washington was inserted into the lineup in the fifth inning, replacing Steve Lombardozzi, who had homered in the Twins’ third. Lombardozzi had to leave after fouling a pitch off his foot.

Bert Blyleven (7-7) scattered 11 hits over 7 innings to get the victory. Blyleven, who is paying a daily $50 fine for sporting a beard that violates a Twin rule requiring players to be clean-shaven in uniform, said the new growth is good luck.

New York 9, Detroit 5--Reliever Dave Righetti, who usually pitches only in the ninth inning, allowed no runs over the final three innings for his 18th save of the season before a crowd of 43,227 at Yankee Stadium.

The three innings were the most Righetti had pitched in one game this season.

Righetti had blown seven saves in his first 25 chances, but has faltered in only two of his last 12.

Dan Pasqua hit a leadoff home run, and Rickey Henderson hit a two-run double in the Yankees’ four-run second inning against Detroit starter Eric King (4-1).

Claudell Washington homered and had three hits for New York.
