A pair of robbery suspects, fleeing from victims who had offered unexpected resistance, jumped from a second-story window . . . almost into the arms of two startled San Francisco police officers.

Police said Brian Rodriguez, 34, and James Hayes, 33, had forced their way into an apartment in the Haight-Fillmore district late Saturday, threatened to murder a 4-year-old girl, fought with and robbed another, and were trying to escape from other members of the enraged family when they jumped from a window and landed alongside a cruising patrol car.

Rodriguez was captured in seconds and Hayes, who was on parole after serving part of a murder-robbery conviction, was arrested after a brief footrace.

“I couldn’t believe our luck,” said a gleeful Officer Gary Constantine, 31, after he and Officer Robert Glembot, 31, made the arrests. “It was a great caper.”
