Local News in Brief : Sulfur Spill Causes Jam on Golden State

Share

A ulfur spill on the Golden State Freeway near Griffith Park forced the closing of the northbound lanes for more than an hour Monday evening, creating a lengthy traffic jam, authorities said.

The four northbound lanes were closed just south of the Ventura Freeway from 5:45 p.m. to 7 p.m., California Highway Patrol Officer Dan Loughrey said. The northbound transition lanes to the westbound Ventura Freeway also were closed, Loughrey said.

The spill, which clogged northbound traffic for several miles, was caused by two 50-pound bags of sulfur falling from a truck, he said.

“It’s really difficult to describe how much of a backup we had,” Loughrey said. “It was just a nasty mess.”

Hazardous-materials teams from the California Department of Transportation and the Los Angeles City Fire Department, which could not use water to wash away the sulfur because the mixture is dangerous, swept up the spilled material, authorities said.

No injuries and no damages were caused by the spill, Fire Department spokesman Jim Wells said.
