A record 830,261 people spent about $2.4 million this year just to get into the Del Mar Fair, which closed Sunday after a busy three-day holiday weekend.

Attendance for the 18-day event was up by 8,767 from last year’s record of 821,494. Fair promoters attributed the increase to more midway rides and diverse entertainment.

Attendance over the holiday weekend was 64,318 on Independence Day, 58,635 Saturday and 63,378 Sunday. The biggest day of fair attendance in five years was June 28, a Saturday, when 73,034 people walked through the gates, spokeswoman Sally Cable said.

Income also increased at the fair:

Gross ticket sales from carnival rides and games increased $277,000, to $1.8 million. Officials are still calculating figures from food and product concessionaires, but this year’s take is expected to exceed last year’s $1.5 million.
