The number of reported AIDS cases in six suburban counties of the San Francisco Bay Area is growing at a much faster rate than in San Francisco itself, according to state and county health records. While cases have doubled in San Francisco in the last year, the incidence of acquired immune deficiency syndrome has increased in suburban counties by 270%, according to the California Department of Health Services. Last year, one out of six AIDS patients in the Bay Area lived in Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, San Mateo, Santa Clara or Sonoma counties. Today, nearly one in four AIDS patients lives in one of those six counties, or more than 650 of the region’s 2,800 AIDS cases, authorities said. San Francisco health officials warn that the city’s AIDS patient services may soon be stretched to the limit by patients from counties that offer no comparable programs.
