Forty-eight people died on the state’s roads during the three-day Fourth of July holiday, compared to 71 deaths during a four-day Independence Day weekend last year, the California Highway Patrol said. CHP spokesman Kent Milton said there were 2,073 drunk-driving arrests this year, compared to 2,500 during the longer period in 1985.
