Cavaliers Set to Name Seattle’s Wilkens as Their Coach, a Newspaper Reports
The Cleveland Cavaliers today will name Lenny Wilkens of the Seattle SuperSonics as their coach, according to The (Cleveland) Plain Dealer.
Wilkens’ representatives and Cavalier general manager Wayne Embry were working on the final details of a contract Tuesday night, the newspaper reported.
Neither Embry nor Wilkens would confirm the report, but a high-level source within the Cavalier organization indicated Wilkens was the choice, the newspaper said.
The Cavaliers have scheduled a news conference for this morning to announce a new coach.
Wilkens, 48, is the general manager of the SuperSonics. He is a former NBA guard for Seattle and Cleveland and coached for 13 seasons, compiling a .543 winning percentage with the Portland Trail Blazers and Seattle.
Wilkens’ deal with the Cavaliers will bring him an estimated $750,000 over three years, according to The Plain Dealer, which said his current salary is $175,000 annually.
“If I was a betting man, I’d say (the SuperSonics) need to start looking for a new general manager,” Wilkens’ agent, Larry Fleisher, said Tuesday.
