An apparent arson fire destroyed a Van Nuys restaurant early Wednesday, causing an estimated $400,000 damage, Los Angeles fire officials said.

Fire Department spokesman Jim Wells said the Golden Chateau restaurant in the 6500 block of Van Nuys Boulevard was engulfed in flames when firefighters responded to the 3:05 a.m. alarm. It took eight engine companies about 30 minutes to extinguish the fire. No injuries were reported, he said.

Arson investigators said they had no immediate suspects and knew no motive for the blaze, nor have they been able to determine what flammable material or device was used to ignite the fire, which began at the front windows of the one-story building.

Damage to the building was estimated at $250,000, with another $150,000 in damage to its contents, Wells said.
