Dale Murphy (14 homers and 36 runs batted in) is going to the All-Star game as a starting outfielder, but Atlanta Brave teammate Bob Horner (17 homers and 56 RBIs) wasn’t even selected as the backup first baseman. National League Manager Whitey Herzog chose the Houston Astros’ Glenn Davis.

“I don’t blame Whitey,” Horner said. “His hands are tied. There are things he has to do. I am disappointed, though.

“Anyone who says he doesn’t want to make it is a liar.”

Davis leads the National League in home runs--no Astro has led the league this late in a season since Jimmy Wynn in 1967--but there is one other impressive statistic about Horner. He is hitting .367 (11 for 30) with 3 home runs against the 10 pitchers who will comprise the National League staff in Tuesday night’s game at Houston.
