Tennis Roundup : Stadler Upsets Smid, Sanchez

Homegrown qualifier Roland Stadler upset two seeded players Saturday to reach today’s final of the $231,000 Swiss Open tennis tournament against top-seeded Stefan Edberg of Sweden.

Stadler, a 27-year-old law student who is ranked No. 403 in the world, first beat eighth-seeded Czechoslavkian Tomas Smid, 6-4, 6-4, in a resumption of a quarterfinal clash stopped by rain in the first set Friday at Gstaad, Switzerland. The Swiss southpaw then surprised fourth-seeded Emilio Sanchez of Spain, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.

Edberg, who has not dropped a set in the tournament, overpowered Gunnar Gunnarsson, also of Sweden, 6-3, 6-2.

Rain forced postponement of Saturday’s semifinals in the Volvo Tennis Hall of Fame tournament at Newport, R.I.

The matches will be played this morning, with the final following in the afternoon.

Italian Paolo Cane and Swede Kent Carlsson won their semifinal matches Saturday and will meet in today’s final of the $150,000 Nabisco Grand Prix Open at Bordeaux, France.

Cane defeated Ulf Stenlund of Sweden, 6-4, 6-2, while Carlsson beat Ronald Agenor of Haiti, 6-3, 4-6, 6-1.
