Deukmejian’s Refusal to Debate
We could not agree more with your editorial statement that “The people are the losers” when candidates refuse to participate in head-to-head debates.
As you also noted, the campaign for the governorship of California should involve intelligent and respectful discussions of the important issues we face in our state. Debates between the candidates offer our best opportunity for that discussion.
We believe that it is rapidly becoming “common political wisdom” that voters want and expect their candidates to debate, so that they can evaluate their political views and philosophies as they express them side-by-side. We urge Gov. Deukmejian to reconsider his refusal to appear with Mayor Bradley and stand ready to sponsor, as we did in 1982.
