Tennis Roundup : Challenger Takes Edberg to Limit Before Swede Wins the Swiss Open

Top-seeded Stefan Edberg of Sweden defeated unseeded Roland Stadler of Switzerland, 7-5, 4-6, 6-1, 4-6, 6-2, in a 3-hour 25-minute match to win the $231,000 Swiss Open Sunday at Gstaad, Switzerland.

In what was far from a lopsided final, Edberg, ranked sixth in the world, was hard-pressed to solve the unorthodox style of the left-handed Stadler. It was their first meeting ever.

Stadler, a 27-year-old law student who is ranked 414th in the world, entered the tournament as a qualifier. But he put up a battle that earned him ovations from the partisan crowd of 3,500.

For the 20-year-old Edberg, winner of the 1985 Australian Open, it was his first big victory this year. The win was worth $40,000.

For the second straight day, rain forced postponement of play during the semifinals of the $100,000 Volvo Hall of Fame Championship at Newport, R.I.

Tim Wilkison, seeded second, was leading Eddie Edwards of South Africa, 6-3, 4-4, with Edwards serving at deuce when play was halted.

Bill Scanlon had a 1-0 lead in a first-set tiebreaker with Danie Visser of South Africa when play was stopped.

Simultaneous semifinal play will resume this morning, with the final scheduled for this afternoon.

At Bordeaux, France, Italy’s Paolo Cane, playing a more aggressive and varied game, defeated Sweden’s Kent Carlsson, 6-4, 1-6, 7-5, to win a $150,000 Nabisco Grand Prix tournament.
