The three men charged with killing Sheriff’s Department cadet Kelly Bazer in Spring Valley will have separate trials.

The trial of the alleged triggerman, Jesse Lee Stuart, 20, will be assigned Tuesday to a San Diego Superior Court judge. Prosecutors said they want his trial to be first.

The trials of Prentice Byrd, 19, and Ronnie Williams, 20, were both scheduled Monday for Aug. 18 by Superior Court Judge Richard Huffman, but one will follow the other.

Deputy Dist. Atty. Keith Burt did not oppose the defense attorneys’ motions to sever the cases. He said he wanted to use each defendant’s statements in their trials to implicate one or two of the others.

The severance motion was granted June 27 by Superior Court Judge Napoleon Jones in a pretrial hearing.

Bazer, 28, an El Cajon mother of two, was off duty when she was shot to death Jan. 13 after she refused to give a man the keys to her car. The defendants allegedly had robbed a nearby supermarket in Spring Valley and were trying to get away.

The defendants remain in County Jail in lieu of $250,000 bail each.
