Tennis Roundup : Robin White Upset by Holladay
Terry Holladay upset second-seeded Robin White, 6-3, 6-2, Thursday, and fourth-seeded Anne White easily beat Renee Blount, 6-1, 6-3, in the $150,000 Virginia Slims of Newport tournament at Newport, R.I.
Holladay, ranked 162nd in the world, broke Robin White, ranked 20th, in the eighth game of the first set and in the third and fifth games of the second set to advance to today’s quarterfinals of the grass-court event.
In another second-round match, Cammie MacGregor, a 17-year-old amateur who entered the tournament from the qualifying round, beat Rebecca Bryant, 6-4, 7-5.
Mexico’s Francisco Maciel will play Tim Mayotte of the United States today at the Sports Palace in Mexico City in the opening match of the Davis Cup quarterfinal competition between the two countries. Leonardo Lavalle of Mexico will meet Brad Gilbert in the day’s second match.
