Murray’s Writing Is Work of Art, Too
As a native New Yorker, who for the last 60 years enjoyed the words of Rice, Corum, Igoe, Pegler, Gallico, Smith and other chroniclers of the sports scene, I must tell you how much I relished reading the entreaty by Jim Murray to his fellow scribes not to bypass Ozzie Smith in considering the MVP.
This is an essay to be read and savored. It was a delight. I hope the Hall of Fame balloters will be likewise impressed.
The citizens of L.A. are fortunate to have Jim Murray covering the sports beat. As he put it, “with Ozzie Smith, shortstop is not a position, it is an art.” And to paraphrase, with Jim Murray, writing is not a job, it is an art.
