Gulls Brawl but Can’t Stop Streak

Share

Bad news continues to roll in for the Ventura County Gulls with the latest installment of gloom coming from Stockton where the Gulls dropped their fifth straight California League game.

But at least the Gulls didn’t take Saturday night’s 3-2 defeat quietly, engaging in a bench-clearing brawl in the eighth inning after Stockton pitcher Martin Montano hit Luis Reyna with a pitch. Reyna was ejected from the game for his role in the fight.

The Gulls collected 11 hits off three Stockton pitchers but stranded nine runners as their record fell to 9-16 in the season’s second half.

Stockton starter Jeff Peterek (10-4) allowed one run on seven hits in six innings to gain the win. Derek Diaz pitched the final 1 innings to pick up his seventh save.

Ventura County starter Elvis Ciprian (1-6) took the loss, allowing three runs (two unearned) on five hits and four walks in four innings.

Stockton scored twice in the second off Ciprian on a run-producing double by Fred Williams and Rob Dewolf’s suicide squeeze. Stockton scored what proved to be the game-winner in the fifth when Dewolf walked, took third on Walt Pohle’s single and came home on a wild pitch by reliever Hugh Brinson.

The Gulls scored once in the fourth when Darryl Landrum singled home Domingo Martinez, and again in the ninth when Landrum doubled and came home on Kevin Batiste’s single.
