Local News in Brief : 4 Fires Char Forest Above Canyon Country
Four separate brush fires broke out almost simultaneously Sunday morning in a remote area of Angeles National Forest above Canyon Country.
The fires near May Canyon and Santa Clara truck trails began within a mile of one another about 7 a.m. between the Antelope Valley Freeway and Little Tujunga Road, U.S. Forest Service spokeswoman Rita Plair said.
Arson investigators from the Forest Service and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department are investigating the causes of the fires, which charred a total of about four acres. Sheriff’s deputies combed the area for suspects but found none, county Fire Capt. Terry Hart said.
Nine engine companies, three helicopters and seven crews from the Forest Service and the county Fire Department had the fires controlled in about two hours. Firefighters were hampered by dense brush and steep terrain, Hart said.
The largest of the blazes burned about two acres; the three smaller fires blackened about half an acre each, authorities said.
Because of the four separate starts, the fires had the potential to have been much larger, Hart said.
