Lil Bit Shiney Wins Rainbow Futurity
Lil Bit Shiney ran down Some Power Play to capture the 23rd running of the Rainbow Futurity for 2-year-old quarter horses.
The victory by the impressive colt was worth $240,316 for owners Shelley and Lodie Stapleton of Bellaire, Tex. The Rainbow is the second of the three major stakes races run annually at the Ruidoso Downs. The series concludes with the $2.5 million All-American Futurity on Labor Day.
Ridden by Jeff Williams, Lil Bit Shiney wore down Some Power Play after the two raced head-to-head through the first 100 yards of the 400-yard dash.
Lil Bit Shiney reached the wire a length in front and covered the distance in 19.72 seconds, the second-fastest clocking in the history of the race.
Some Power Play, the top qualifier following two rounds of trials, earned $109,859 for a partnership based in Norman, Okla.
