A grand jury investigating the cocaine-caused death of Maryland basketball star Len Bias issued 75 subpoenas, while Bias’ parents expressed concern over a “trial by media” that they said may taint the secret inquest.

Arthur Marshall, the Prince George’s County state attorney, said that the grand jury, which meets in secret, will try to determine who gave the cocaine to Bias.

The grand jury will also investigate reports that Maryland Coach Lefty Driesell instructed his players to dispose of evidence, allegations that could lead to obstruction of justice charges. Driesell has been subpoenaed but may not be asked to testify.
