Stanislaus County supervisors voted unanimously to halt the sale of pound animals for veterinary research. The move came despite warnings from a Modesto veterinarian that local bans are part of a nationwide conspiracy by animal rights activists to eventually stop the use of any animals in medical laboratory research. But supporters of the ban said people are abandoning unwanted pets on the streets rather than turning them over to the county pound out of fear that the animals will end up as experiments. Halting such sales would “restore public confidence” in the county’s animal shelter, they argued.
