Raiders Give Fred Dean, 34, a Tryout

Fred Dean of the San Francisco 49ers, once a feared pass rusher, tried out with the Raiders Wednesday, with the 49ers’ permission.

The 49ers reportedly tried to persuade Dean, 34, to retire. Dean said he wanted to return. 49er Coach Bill Walsh said he’d made other plans and asked Al Davis if he was interested in Dean.

Said Raider Coach Tom Flores: “He has shown a great interest in coming to play for us. We wanted to see if he looked good, to see if he could do some of the things we recall him doing so well.

“He looked to be well . . . At this point, we’re considering it.”

Dean held out for 11 games in 1984, then had 7 1/2 sacks in the final eight games, including playoffs and the Super Bowl victory over Miami.

Dean’s sacks dropped to three last season. He reportedly has a $125,000 reporting bonus. The Raiders would presumably want to renegotiate so that they wouldn’t have to pay that much just to give him a chance to make their team.

Raider Notes The Raiders signed Brad Cochran, the defensive back from Michigan they drafted in the third round. They have now signed all their draftees. . . . The Raiders are expected to make about 12 cuts today, with the veterans due in camp. Charlie Hannah and Frank Hawkins remain unsigned.
