BRIEFLY : Country Club to Honor Duarte Before Fights

Two main events featuring Valley-area fighters and a tribute to Frankie Duarte highlight Tuesday night’s seven-card fight night at the Country Club in Reseda. The show starts at 7:30 p.m.

In one of the main events, bantamweight Manny Olivas will fight Javier Lara in a scheduled eight-rounder. Olivas, from North Hollywood, has a record of 9-3, while Lara, from Panorama City, has a 7-5 mark. Lara is coming off an upset win over Robert Lopez last month at the Country Club.

The other main event is also a scheduled eight-rounder between bantamweights Randy Ortega and Jenaro Espitia. Ortega is 6-2, while Espitia is 5-4. Both fighters are from North Hollywood.

Between those two bouts, Frankie Duarte, who trains in North Hollywood, will be presented with his North American Boxing Federation and Stroh’s Championship bantamweight belts.

Hart’s Sanchez Joins

Coaching Staff at USC

Hart High baseball Coach Frank Sanchez is taking a one-year leave of absence to join the coaching staff of USC Coach Mike Gillespie.

Sanchez’s teams won six Foothill League championships in his seven seasons at Hart. At USC, he will be the assistant scouting director and pitching coach.

Sanchez, who is currently coaching the North Pole Nicks in the Alaska Summer League, played for Gillespie at College of the Canyons.

The Santa Clarita Swim Festival will be held Sunday at College of the Canyons beginning at 9 a.m. Up to 200 people are expected to compete in age groups 6-and-under, 7-8, 9-10, 11-12, 13-14, 15-and-over and parents. There is a cost of $1 per event and the public is invited. The festival is organized by the Canyons Aquatic Club.

Christopher Bowman of Van Nuys moved into the lead in men’s figure skating competition Friday at the United States Olympic Festival in Houston. Bowman, 19, who suffered a stress fracture in his right leg in December, was first with five of the seven judges and second with the other two to record nine ordinals and 86.20 points.

The men’s short program is today and the long program, which counts for 50% of the total score, is on Sunday.

Cindy Bortz of Tarzana, the national junior women’s champion, took the lead in the women’s compulsories with 12 ordinals and 78.20 points.

Defending solo champion Betsy Visinski of Thousand Oaks led the synchronized swimming figures portion of the competition Friday. Visinski, 22, earned 89.150 points for the six compulsory figures.

The Valley Dodgers will have 100-inning intra-squad baseball game Sunday at Cal State Northridge to raise funds for its trip to Wichita Kan. to play in the National Baseball Congress World Series. The team will also have a golf tournament at the Knollwood Country Club in Granada Hills Monday at 8 a.m.
