The world chess championship match begins today in London between titleholder Gary Kasparov and challenger Anatoly Karpov. In a pre-match ceremony attended by Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, the challenger drew the right to play first with the white pieces. The first 12 games will be played in London and the last 12 in Leningrad. Karpov, 35, champion since 1975, was dethroned last year by Kasparov, 23.
