2 SDSU Recruits Have Academic Problems
Two San Diego State basketball recruits will not play for the Aztecs this season because of academic deficiencies.
Chris Fox, a 6-foot 2-inch guard from Wichita, Kan., did not meet SDSU’s grade-point average or course requirements for admission.
Darrell Fuller of Ontario, listed by the Aztecs as their first 7-foot recruit, is ineligible to play as a freshman under National Collegiate Athletic Assn. rules because of an insufficient SAT test score.
“Chris Fox did not meet university admission requirements,” said Al Luginbill, assistant athletic director. “Darrell Fuller is scheduled to redshirt his freshman year. That was a condition for his admittance to the university. In his freshman year, he’ll have the opportunity to get settled academically.”
Fox averaged 24 points in two games for Kapaun Mt. Carmel High last season. He was then ruled ineligible because an acquaintance had paid his tuition to the private school. That is against Kansas high school rules. As a junior, Fox averaged 17.9 points and 5.8 assists and was named to the all-Wichita second team.
Fuller averaged 19 points and 12.3 rebounds for Ontario High last season. He was named to the All-Hacienda League first team.
“We thought Fox could come in and play,” Coach Smokey Gaines said. “But we thought Fuller would probably have to redshirt. You’re going to have these problems sometimes.”
The Aztecs lost two recruits last year who did not qualify for admission to SDSU.
