ARTS NOTES : UCI SHOWING WORKS BY 8 PORTUGUESE PAINTERS

Forty paintings by eight living Portuguese artists are on exhibit at UC Irvine’s Phineas Banning Alumni House.

The watercolors and oils are on view through Sunday as part of the 19th exhibition presented in the United States by the Galerias Yela, based in Lisbon.

Jose D. Rodrigues, director of the Lisbon gallery, says that the purpose of the exhibit is to “introduce the best of Portugal’s artistic works to the United States and other countries, and to give Portuguese artists recognition and respect outside of their own country.”

Subjects range from land and seascapes to polo and horse racing, and the styles from impressionism to hyper-realism.

Artists included in the exhibit are Lazaro Lozano, Joao California, Jose Baioa, Jesus Guido, Maria Feranda Amalo, Jose F. Donas, Virgilio Raposo and Alfredo Candela.

The City of Costa Mesa has awarded a $24,000 grant to South Coast Symphony. The award, announced Monday, was one of seven grants given by the city to local arts organizations.

“We’re very grateful to the city for its continual support of our orchestra as well as its commitment to the total arts programs within the city,” conductor Larry Granger said in a phone interview.

“The grant will allow us to continue our artistic development. We hope to increase the number of union musicians to 80-85% of the orchestra, as well as to increase our services to the city.”

The grant, which will help cover general operating expenses, is approximately 10% of the orchestra’s 1986-87 operating budget, Granger said.

This the second award the organization has received from the city. Last year, South Coast Symphony was given a $20,000 grant.

Approximately 180 junior and senior high school students from five Southern California counties will gather at Cal State Fullerton on Sunday to attend the California Music Academy.

The academy, in its 14th year and running through Aug. 15, will offer the young musicians from Ventura to San Diego counties opportunities to participate in jazz ensembles or concert bands, and to take classes in music theory, conducting, music history, piano and chamber music.

“The academy will give the students an intense music experience during the summer, as well as an experience of a university environment,” says Benton L. Minor, professor of music at the university and director of the program.

Recitals will be given daily at 1 p.m. in the foyer of the Performing Arts Building, and concerts will be held on Fridays at 7:30 p.m. in the Little Theater. Both locations are on the college campus. The recitals and concerts are free and open to the public.

Cost for the program is $149, with an additional $235 charge for students who wish to live in the dorms at Pacific Christian College, across from the university.

“We still have room for low brass (instrument) and percussion players,” Minor said.
