Boyd Rejoins Red Sox Today, Will Miss No Pay
The Boston Red Sox will reactivate pitcher Dennis (Oil Can) Boyd today and pay him for the time he was on suspension with personal problems.
A statement released by the Red Sox said that Boyd will be subject to a counseling and support program for the rest of the season.
The problems began for Boyd, who has an 11-6 record, when he threw a tantrum and stormed out of the Red Sox clubhouse July 10 after learning that he would not be on the American League All-Star team.
On July 16, he had an altercation with police outside his home, and the next day he entered the University of Massachusetts Medical Center for tests and observation. He was there for a week.
Boston will open a three-game home series against the Kansas City Royals tonight. It is not known when Boyd will pitch.
When Boyd was suspended July 11, Boston had an eight-game lead in the American League East. The Red Sox have since lost 8 of 10 games, and their lead is down to four games.
