American Team Wins Speedway Bike Series
The USA speedway motorcycle team finished 1-2 in the first four of 23 races Thursday night and went on to defeat the World team, 57-50, in the Budweiser American Cup Challenge at Ascot Park’s South Bay Speedway.
Mark Dwyer, who has been racing on speedway bikes for only three years, scored 11 points to lead the American riders, who got off to a 20-4 lead and then breezed to victory. Jan Andersson of Sweden was the top World competitor with 14 points.
A capacity crowd of 6,000 watched the action.
Two-time world champion Erik Gudersen of Denmark reportedly had problems with customs officials at London’s Heathrow Airport and did not come to Ascot.
