About 150 employees of Scientific Applications Inc. at 476 Prospect St. were evacuated from their offices when an overheated engine in an elevator shaft set some wood afire, filling the building with smoke at 11:36 a.m. Friday.
Firefighters arrived at 11:43 and, despite some difficulties in gaining access to the smoke-filled shaft, extinguished the blaze using carbon dioxide shortly after noon. The fire caused $10,000 in damage, but there were no injuries.
