Service to Honor Inmate Program

The Evangelical Free Church of Fullerton is holding a service at 9 a.m. Sunday in recognition of seven prison inmates who recently refurbished a house under a program sponsored by the church and Prison Fellowship Ministries. The seven men--five from Boron Federal Prison and two from Lompoc Federal Prison--painted, recarpeted, installed a sprinkler system and refurbished fixtures at a home that belongs to an elderly Fullerton resident.

Each inmate chosen to participate in the program is due for release within one year, has previously been furloughed, and is a nonviolent offender. In addition, all are active in chaplain programs at the prisons.

Vacation church school at Fullerton First Presbyterian Church will run 8:45 a.m. to noon weekdays from Monday to Aug. 15. Children of kindergarten age through sixth grade are invited to attend the program. Following the two-week school will be a presentation of “The Selfish Giant,” a children’s play by Oscar Wilde, at the 10 a.m. service on Aug. 17. Cost of the school is $5 per child per week. St. Irenaeus Catholic Church in Cypress will be the site of a workshop for those interested in leading Scripture study groups. The session is open to those who have had formal study of Scripture. To register, call (714) 826-0760.

The first in a monthlong series of lectures will be held at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday by the Capistrano Valley Church of Religious Science, which meets at the San Juan Plaza, 32261 San Juan Capistrano. According to the Rev. Leslie Howard, pastor of the church, the “Starlight Series” is designed to “enliven thinking, to lift thoughts out of the summer doldrums.” The first lecture will be given by the Rev. Tom Johnson. Community Baptist Church, 17345 Yorba Linda Blvd., Yorba Linda, will hold vacation Bible school and a film series from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday through Friday. The Bible school is offered to all children, infants through sixth grade. “Turn Your Heart Toward Home,” a film series produced by James Dobson, will screen at the same time. Both programs are free. “Summer Joy,” a weeklong series of events sponsored by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Orange for youths ages 13 to 18 will commence Tuesday with “Hi-Tops,” a play dealing with issues faced by teen-agers. Other activities include workshops and a concert. Most events will be held from 7 to 10 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday at Chapman College, 333 N. Glassell, Orange. A barbecue and dance will be held from 6 to 11 p.m. Friday at St. Vincent de Paul Church, 8345 Talbert Ave., Huntington Beach. Tickets for this event are $3 and may be purchased at the church or through the diocese’s youth ministry office. A Liturgy service will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday. The Rev. Donald H. Gard will give the sermon at the 9 and 11 a.m. services Sunday at Geneva Presbyterian Church, 24301 EL Toro Road, Laguna Hills. Gard has been department chairman for religious studies at Cal State Fullerton since 1967 and was professor of theology at Princeton Theological Seminary. Summer Sunday school will be held at 9:15 a.m. for first grade through junior high. Child care for younger children will also be offered.

Mount of Olives Lutheran Church is holding vacation Bible school from 9 a.m. to noon Monday through next Friday at the church, 24772 Chrisanta Drive, Mission Viejo.
