TRASHING THE MOVIES
OK, guys, you knew what you were getting into.
You knew full well that any time you publish a “Best of” list of anything, you’ll be bombarded with letters from readers whose favorites you’ve ignored. It’s tradition. So, being a traditional kind of fellow, I’d like to point out a few glaring omissions from your July 27 lists.
There should be a place on the list of “notable” sound tracks for Mark Knopfler’s beautiful work in both “Cal” and “Local Hero,” which are sensitive, evocative scores that stand alone as marvelously as they worked with both films.
The most obvious omission of all, from my humble point of view, was that of Terry Gilliam’s fabulous “Brazil” from the “Best of the ‘80s” list. A masterful blend of style, wit and substance, this film stayed on my mind for weeks after I saw it, and its power has held up for me through two subsequent viewings.
As for heroes, Terry “When Are You Going to Release My Film, Mr. Sheinberg” Gilliam positively rates as a “cat that walked by himself” in my book.
