Fire Blackens 600 Acres in Canyon Near Corona

Share

About 600 acres of dry grass burned Saturday in an inaccessible canyon near Prado Dam in Riverside County, but no one was injured and no buildings were damaged.

The fire was reported about 2:30 p.m. in Fresno Canyon, three miles southwest of the Corona city limits. About 150 firefighters were on the lines, aided by six air tankers and three water-dropping helicopters, said State Forestry Fire Capt. Don Feely.

One home was briefly threatened, but firefighters cut off the advance of the flames. The canyon is steep and narrow and difficult for fire trucks to enter.

“It’s a fairly rugged area and very much an aircraft fire,” Feely said.

Firefighters expected to contain the fire about midnight.

Smoke from the fire could be seen five miles away in downtown Corona, and units from the city Fire Department assisted.

Cause of the fire was still under investigation Saturday night.
