Challenger Anatoly Karpov won the fifth game of the world chess championship Wednesday and tied the score with champion Gary Kasparov.

Karpov’s victory gave both Soviet grandmasters 2 1/2 points in the 24-game match. The winner will be the first player to score six victories or 12 1/2 points.

The 23-year-old champion, who had taken the lead Tuesday after scoring the first victory in the fourth game, resigned after Karpov’s 32nd move when he realized that an advanced but exposed pawn, which was one square away from becoming a queen, could no longer be defended.

Karpov, 35, had the advantage of playing the white pieces in the game, in which Kasparov moved into a Gruenfeld defense.

The champion had easily gained draws in the first and third games using this defense, but after days of preparation Karpov came up with a different idea.

Karpov was able to gain an advantage with a big phalanx of pawns in the center of the board.

Game No. 6 is scheduled for Friday.
