Senate Refuses to Kill Navy Home Port Plan

WASHINGTON — The Senate rejected an attempt Wednesday night to kill the Navy’s plan to create a series of new ports around the nation to base its growing fleet.
The vote was 65 to 34 against an amendment that would have eliminated $141 million from a defense budget bill for the first two ports, in New York City and Washington state. Under the home port plan, other new bases would be constructed in the future along the Gulf and Pacific coasts.
Senate leaders said they hope to finish the $295-billion defense bill today.
Earlier Wednesday, the Senate rejected an effort to raise the price of cigarettes on military bases as a way of helping service personnel kick the habit and approved a plan to revise the Pentagon’s organization of special forces units to provide better coordination.
