Bill Gullickson pitched a five-hitter and drove in a run, and Buddy Bell hit a solo home run Friday night to lead the Cincinnati Reds to a 4-0 victory over the Dodgers in the first game of a doubleheader.

Gullickson (8-7) struck out a season-high eight and walked none in posting his first shutout and fourth complete game.

Losing pitcher Orel Hershiser (11-8) gave up six hits, walked three and struck out seven in 6 innings. The Dodgers lost for only the second time in their last 11 games.

Bell provided the Reds with a 1-0 lead in the fourth when he hit the second pitch of the inning over the left field wall for his eighth homer of the season.

The Reds extended their lead to 2-0 in the sixth. Kal Daniels opened the inning with a walk, stole second and advanced to third on Bell’s groundout. Dave Parker’s sacrifice fly easily scored Daniels.

The Reds made it 4-0 in the seventh. Kurt Stillwell doubled and, one out later, Ron Oester was walked intentionally. Gullickson singled through Hershier’s legs to score Stillwell and move Oester to second. Daniels followed with a single to right to score Oester.

The Dodgers failed to advanced a runner past second base. Bill Madlock and Greg Brock hit two-out doubles in the first and fifth innings, respectively, but both were stranded. Franklin Stubbs opened the seventh with a single, but he too could advance only to second base.
