Tony Eason, playing for the first time since completing none of six Super Bowl passes, threw for 282 yards and one touchdown Sunday night to lead the New England Patriots to an 18-7 exhibition victory over the Washington Redskins.

Eason, who was benched in the 46-10 Super Bowl loss to the Chicago Bears, teamed up with Craig James for a 38-yard pass play on the Patriots’ first play, helping to set up a 41-yard field goal by Tony Franklin.

Washington went ahead, 7-3, on rookie Rick Badanjek’s 10-yard run with 3:34 left in the half. But Eason directed a 94-yard drive that ended with his two-yard touchdown pass to Stephen Starring.

The Redskins never caught up in losing their exhibition opener. The Patriots improved their record to 2-0.

New England scored on its next possession on Mosi Tatupu’s three-yard run. The Patriots added a safety when quarterback Mark Rypien’s fourth-quarter fumble went out of the end zone.

Eason, who didn’t play in New England’s 21-16 victory over St. Louis Aug. 2, went all the way Sunday night, completing 20 of 32 attempts.
