TRAVELING MAN : Cina Wins for Valley Dodgers in Wichita Between Study Sessions Back Home in Valencia

About half the members of the Valley Dodgers drove 3 1/2 hours Tuesday to Kansas City to see the Royals play a doubleheader against the Boston Red Sox. But instead of sitting behind home plate at Royals Stadium with his teammates, who are competing in the National Baseball Congress World Series, Randy Cina was sitting in his living room in Valencia.

Cina, who pitched a complete game Monday in the the Dodgers’ 8-2, eight-inning win over Athletes in Action of Colorado Springs, Colo., flew home to study for a physical geography test at Santa Monica College on Thursday.

“I’ve been supposed to be studying during the tournament, but it’s kind of tough,” said Cina, a left-hander from Cal State Northridge whose performance helped make the Dodgers one of eight teams remaining in the 34-team double-elimination tournament. “Pitching in front of 9,000 hostile fans in our first game was pretty tough. I don’t think this test will be quite as bad.”

The Dodgers (25-9), who have won three straight games after losing their tournament opener to Wichita, will play Thursday against an opponent yet to be determined.

“I’m going to call Wichita after my test,” said Cina who pitched eight innings, allowed six hits and struck out four Monday. “If we’re still alive, I’m going to fly back out there.”

Against Athletes in Action, Perry Husband, who helped lead CSUN to the 1984 NCAA Division II national championship, had two hits, three runs batted in and four stolen bases. Rick Allen, a sophomore from Fresno State who played at Calabasas High, was 2 for 3 and drove in a run.

The Dodgers broke a open a 1-1 game in the third inning when Husband led off with a walk, stole second and third and scored on a sacrifice fly by Kenny Huth. The Dodgers increased their lead to 4-1 in the fourth inning when Husband drove in Allen and John Boyt with a two-run single to right field.

AIA made it 4-2 on a solo home run by catcher Dan Kubacki in the fifth inning, but the Dodgers scored twice in the seventh and twice more in the eighth to make the score 8-2 and end the game because of the tournament’s six-run rule.

Steve Dunn, a junior from Chapman College who was the Southern Section 1-A Player of the Year at Chaminade High in 1984, will start Thursday for the Dodgers. Dunn will become the fifth consecutive left-handed starter the Dodgers have used in the tournament.

The Dodgers, from the Golden State League, are guaranteed no worse than a seventh-place finish--and a top-10 ranking at the start of next season.

Three other Golden State League members have already been eliminated from the tournament. The San Diego Stars finished the season ranked 11th, the Ventura County Royals finished 17th and the El Rio Blue Sox finished 25th.
