La Mirada : City Takes Over Bus System
In a move to save at least $6,000, the City Council this week decided to take over the Dial-A-Ride bus system, which last year carried more than 90,000 passengers.
The council voted to end its contract with Community Transit Services, which has supplied drivers, dispatchers and supervisors for the city’s Dial-A-Ride system since the mid-1970s. The city owns the 10 Dial-A-Ride vehicles and spends about $240,000 a year to run the bus line.
Tom Robinson, the city’s Community Resources manager, said spiraling insurance costs prompted the city to end its contract with Community Transit Services effective Nov. 15. By hiring its own drivers and dispatchers the city will initially save $6,000 a year. But in the long run, Robinson said, the savings should grow as administrative costs are reduced.
