Greg LeMond, spurred by a cheering hometown crowd, won the fifth stage of the Coors International bicycle race Wednesday by edging ahead of a bunched field near the end of the 99.5-mile race.

“I really wanted to win today in Reno,” said LeMond, who last week drew 10,000 Renoites to a homecoming parade after his victory in last month’s Tour de France, cycling’s most prestigious event.

“I took a little risk on the last corner to come in first,” LeMond said. I probably wouldn’t have done that in Boulder(Colo.). Winning in my hometown really gave me some incentive.”

With his win, LeMond, 25, moved from eighth place to sixth place in the overall standings in the 1,065-mile race.

Dag-Otto Lauritzen of Norway maintained his lead with an overall time of 16:23:28, 18 seconds ahead of Doug Shapiro.
