A 27-year-old Arleta man has been arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter after a head-on collision that killed a registered nurse, Los Angeles police reported Thursday.
The man, Javier G. Bermea, was racing a motorcyclist at 11:10 p.m. Wednesday in the 9300 block of Van Nuys Boulevard when he crossed into oncoming traffic in the southbound lanes, Sgt. Mel Cunningham said.
Bermea’s car collided with a car driven by Carolyn Turner, 62, of Pacoima, Cunningham said. Turner, who worked at Olive View Medical Center, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Bermea was treated for a concussion and cuts at Holy Cross Hospital in Mission Hills and was transferred to the jail ward at County-USC Medical Center, where he is being held on $5,000 bail, Cunningham said.
